Even with all of the controversy, politics, and sometimes stagnant races, Formula 1 continues to be the pinnacle of auto racing. The first race is a week away. Bring on Melbourne.
Last thing I want to do is stroke his ego. But I’ll give Bruce Thomson, my teacher from college, some credit. He’s mega talented. These are some F1 concepts that he’s created. The McLaren is top notch. More of his work here.
The FIA announced the other day that the season finale race will now award double points. DAFUQ? No don’t give single points for pole or fastest lap, let’s double the points for the shit show that is Yas Marina, Abu Dhabi. They also scheduled the American GP (in Texas) the same day as the NASCAR race in Texas. Genius. Who runs the FIA? Rob Ford? I’ve been an F1 proponent for years, even though I know the product is sometimes suspect. But COME ON, listen to the fans for once. We can’t go back in time for low downforce, wide, big tire’d, balls out cars anymore. But these retro liveries, liken to bygone years of smokes and retro graphics, make it possible for us to time travel..sort of.

Unless you live under a rock, you’ll know that Sebastian Vettel was crowned 4 time F1 Champ last weekend. It was an amazing achievement. One that I think put him ahead of Senna (flame suit on), but still behind Schumacher, Fangio, Clark and Stewart. I’m sure at only 26 he’ll win a few more. We are currently witnessing a demolition of the record books. This is on another level to Schumie’s dominance. The caliber of drivers currently has never been so high. Almost a shame that more from North America are not watching.
Traction control has been banned for a few years in F1. Now it seems Redbull has found a loophole. Through manipulating torque curves and the partial firing of cylinders. Insiders believe the Austrian outfit has curbed the TC ban. As an F1 fanatic its this stupid stuff that’s so interesting.
Racing movies mostly suck. The two standouts being Grand Prix and Le Mans. While not exactly great films, in the realms of auto racing in film. They are the best. I hope Rush can be mentioned with those two in the future. I still have a soft spot for Days of Thunder though. Let’s not get started on Driven.
It is the story of James Hunt, the dude who slept with 33 air stewardesses in a span of two weeks vs. Niki Lauda, the guy who almost died at the Nurburgring, only to return 2 races later.
Not sure how I feel about this. It seems as though Vettel went against team orders to pass Webber. But I’m here to watch great racing. I think Webber would have done the same given the chance. It’s just drivers being drivers. And IMO, much better than Mercedes’ jog to the end.
Edit* The FIA is really fast at shutting down copyrighted video lol
